It all started with a little pain in my chest one afternoon. My wife, Rosinia, asked if I needed to go to the hospital, but I didn’t think it was too serious and wanted to wait and see. By the next morning my chest pain had increased dramatically, I was dizzy, and I was having trouble breathing. We were very worried. Rosinia got me in the car and drove me to Richmond Hospital just a few minutes away.

As soon as we arrived at Emergency, Dr. Matthew Kwok checked my vital signs, and there was a bustle of activity around me. The nurses and doctors were moving very quickly, running machines over to me for testing, and telling me not to move. I realized that I was in a serious condition. If I told you I wasn’t scared, I’d be lying.
I was immediately taken to a lab for x-rays, an MRI, and other tests. They discovered that my veins had gotten dangerously small and there were several blockages to my heart. If I had come in just 30 minutes later I could have suffered a stroke and a massive heart attack. This realization was overwhelming.
When Dr. Kwok explained the results to me I was very nervous, but he was reassuring and carefully laid out the plan. I needed to go into surgery to have a stent put in right away. Dr. Kwok’s calm demeanour put me at ease, and I knew I was in the hands of an expert.
Throughout all of this many thoughts were racing through my mind, but the foremost thought was Rosinia. How would my wife have coped if I’d had a stroke or died of a heart attack? I was just so thankful we lived close by and had gotten to Richmond Hospital on time.
I wouldn’t be here today without Dr. Kwok and the hospital staff. They helped me feel safe and comfortable, and I experienced firsthand how well patients are treated at Richmond Hospital. The kindness and professionalism at Richmond Hospital was a source of strength during this most frightening experience. My wife and I will be forever grateful.
