Surgical Restart Campaign

Often it’s the only answer. Whether it’s for an emergency, a disease, an injury or repairing a vital function of the body, patients rely on Richmond Hospital for surgeries so they can get back on track to good health. Richmond Hospital is home to more than 4,000 inpatient surgeries and more than 5,000 outpatient surgeries each year. Whenever you need it, Richmond Hospital’s surgical team is here for you and your family.

Our hospital is home to incredibly compassionate, highly talented surgeons and health care professionals who have dedicated their careers to provide a vast range of surgical procedures to save and improve the lives of patients from across Richmond and beyond.

Recent events have thrust our health care teams into the spotlight, focusing on how important health is to all of us and how vital the support from our community is to help it flourish. Keeping our health care strong is a core value that runs deep in our community.

As scheduled surgeries resume post-COVID-19 and backlogs are tackled, we know that there is a great and urgent need for surgical equipment, following many weeks where surgeries were put on hold and patients suffering pain and hardship made sacrifices.

We believe that now is the time to invite philanthropic leaders to take action to help fund what’s innovative and necessary to help our surgeons care for those who need it most.

Our health care teams demonstrate outstanding expertise, but as demand for surgeries escalates, we need to equip them with the surgical tools that match their high-calibre skills and their drive for high-quality care. That means surgical equipment that’s state-of-the-art with the most advanced technology to enable the adoption of new and innovative techniques. For patients, this means:

  • Shorter surgeries
  • Greater efficiencies
  • Faster healing times
  • Improved outcomes
  • Faster procedures
  • Less pain and bleeding
  • Shorter hospital stays
  • Faster return to an optimal life

When illness, disease, or emergency strikes, our surgical teams are here to help you. Contact us today to learn more on how you can make a direct impact today by helping our surgical teams here at Richmond Hospital.

“As scheduled surgeries resume post-COVID-19 and backlogs are cleared, we know there is a great and urgent need for surgical equipment. Having state-of-the-art equipment allows us to use new ground-breaking surgical techniques, allowing our patients in Richmond to benefit sooner from equipment that has become the new standard of care.”

Multi-Specialty Surgical System & Operating Room Technology Facelifts

$1.6 MILLION REQUIRED

Richmond Hospital’s minimally invasive surgical suites are receiving major technology upgrades as a result of recent innovations allowing the surgical team to take advantage of the latest advances available today.

Richmond Hospital is home to eight ORs, with four providing patients with the majority of minimally invasive procedures. Unlike traditional surgeries, minimally invasive procedures use tiny surgical scopes inserted through small incisions enabling the surgical team to perform procedures resulting in less bleeding, less pain, faster healing and recovery and better outcomes. This new surgical equipment will be integrated in four Operating Rooms, benefitting all surgical specialties at Richmond Hospital, including Plastic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Ear, Nose, Throat (ENT), Orthopedics, Gynecology, General Surgery & Bariatrics and Urology.

All four ORs will receive technology facelifts to embed innovative ultrafine 4K screens to dramatically improve visualization for surgeons. These new screens will provide the greatest clarity and the highest resolution possible to view the area where the surgeon is operating. Each OR will be a connected hub complete with wireless technology providing the ability to send, receive and view images and other important information as it’s needed while in the OR.

The new state-of-the-art minimally invasive surgical system will provide a technological leap forward to equip our high-calibre surgeons with the tools they need so that patients can return home quickly and safely and live their lives with joy.

Lithotripsy Laser

$165,000 REQUIRED

Kidney stones are a common disease that strikes up to 15% of the population. In addition to being found in the kidneys, stones can also occur in the bladder and ureter. Richmond Hospital urologists handle approximately 220 cases of stone surgery each year. One of the high priority needs of the urology team is a new specialized lithotripsy laser to surgically remove the stones. Our current unit is a low wattage laser which is more than 10 years old and at the end of its lifespan. Having state-of-the-art technology makes certain that our urologists have the equipment they need to provide the best care possible.

Bipolar Cautery Units & Associated Equipment

2 @ $45,000 EACH ($90,000 IN TOTAL REQUIRED)

Richmond Hospital urologists need new “electrosurgery” equipment for cutting, coagulation, vaporization and dissection. Unlike traditional technology for electrosurgery, new bipolar cautery technology does not need to be grounded on a patient’s body. As the electrical current does not travel across the patient’s body, the current in bipolar cautery does not interfere with pacemakers in cardiology patients or with deep brain stimulators for patients with Parkinson’s disease or other movement disorders.

Richmond Hospital will be the first in B.C. to use the new equipment, placing us on par with major centres in the U.S. who are rapidly adopting the new technology as a new standard of care.

Cystoscopes & Associated Equipment

4 @ $20,000 EACH ($80,000 IN TOTAL REQUIRED)

Cystoscopes are surgical instruments with lights and lenses that allow urologists to examine a patient’s urinary tract in the operating room to help diagnose and treat urinary problems such as growths, stones, tumours, infections, pain or the presence of blood in the urine.
Richmond’s growing number of patients requiring urologic care is placing pressure on our surgical equipment and increasing "wear and tear." New cystoscopes are required to keep pace with the number of surgical procedures our urologists are performing.

Mini C-Arm

$100,000 REQUIRED

A mini C-Arm is a mobile diagnostic imaging tool that uses x-rays to help physicians and surgeons examine specific areas of their patients on the spot. Used by both Emergency Department physicians and orthopedic surgeons to help examine injuries and provide care for broken limbs and joints, the mini C-arm is an essential piece of medical equipment. Richmond Hospital’s newest mini C-Arm is in constant use but its second mini C-Arm used in the cast clinic for broken bones is at risk of breaking down and must be replaced. The latest generation of mini C-Arms provides dramatically higher definition imaging than older models. They also use much lower doses of radiation than outdated models, resulting in less exposure for both the patients and our health care professionals.

ENT Surgical Navigation System

$170,000 REQUIRED

Richmond Hospital urgently needs a new ENT (Ear Nose Throat) surgical navigation unit for sino-nasal surgical procedures to help guide procedures in difficult to access areas to remove polyps and tumours and help patients breathe. The equipment incorporates image-guided navigation technology—almost like a GPS inside the nose—highlighting important anatomy and providing the surgeon with greater confidence in a small, delicate and challenging area. Our current equipment is now broken. It is obsolete and so old it cannot be repaired. Without the equipment, patients with sino-nasal diseases or tumours will need to go elsewhere for treatment. Your donation can ensure Richmond Hospital has the very best for patients.

Microtome Tissue Slicers

$140,000 REQUIRED (4 @ $35,000 EACH)

To make an accurate diagnosis when a patient has a suspicious mass of tissue surgically removed, Richmond Hospital Lab physicians rely on a microtome to slice tissue samples obtained from the patient in the operating room.
Richmond Hospital has four microtomes that are 20 years old, the oldest in the entire region and now at the end of their lifespans. They are now so obsolete, if they break, parts are unavailable and they cannot be repaired. Over the past five years, the Lab has seen an increase of nearly 65% in the surgical samples that must be processed. After so many years of wear, slicing must often be repeated multiple times and slides are often duplicated to ensure at least one slide will be the correct thickness. New microtomes will speed workflows and ensure highly accurate tissue slices can be made consistently and reliably each and every time so our physicians can provide you the answers you need as a patient or a family member.
