Kidney stones are a common disease that strikes up to 15% of the population. In addition to being found in the kidneys, stones can also occur in the bladder and ureter. Richmond Hospital urologists handle approximately 220 cases of stone surgery each year. One of the high priority needs of the urology team is a new specialized lithotripsy laser to surgically remove the stones. Our current unit is a low wattage laser which is more than 10 years old and at the end of its lifespan. Having state-of-the-art technology makes certain that our urologists have the equipment they need to provide the best care possible.

Bipolar Cautery Units & Associated Equipment

Richmond Hospital urologists need new “electrosurgery” equipment for cutting, coagulation, vaporization and dissection. Unlike traditional technology for electrosurgery, new bipolar cautery technology does not need to be grounded on a patient’s body. As the electrical current does not travel across the patient’s body, the current in bipolar cautery does not interfere with pacemakers in cardiology patients or with deep brain stimulators for patients with Parkinson’s disease or other movement disorders.

Richmond Hospital will be the first in B.C. to use the new equipment, placing us on par with major centres in the U.S. who are rapidly adopting the new technology as a new standard of care.

Cystoscopes & Associated Equipment

Cystoscopes are surgical instruments with lights and lenses that allow urologists to examine a patient’s urinary tract in the operating room to help diagnose and treat urinary problems such as growths, stones, tumours, infections, pain or the presence of blood in the urine.
Richmond’s growing number of patients requiring urologic care is placing pressure on our surgical equipment and increasing "wear and tear." New cystoscopes are required to keep pace with the number of surgical procedures our urologists are performing.

Mini C-Arm

A mini C-Arm is a mobile diagnostic imaging tool that uses x-rays to help physicians and surgeons examine specific areas of their patients on the spot. Used by both Emergency Department physicians and orthopedic surgeons to help examine injuries and provide care for broken limbs and joints, the mini C-arm is an essential piece of medical equipment. Richmond Hospital’s newest mini C-Arm is in constant use but its second mini C-Arm used in the cast clinic for broken bones is at risk of breaking down and must be replaced. The latest generation of mini C-Arms provides dramatically higher definition imaging than older models. They also use much lower doses of radiation than outdated models, resulting in less exposure for both the patients and our health care professionals.

ENT Surgical Navigation System

Richmond Hospital urgently needs a new ENT (Ear Nose Throat) surgical navigation unit for sino-nasal surgical procedures to help guide procedures in difficult to access areas to remove polyps and tumours and help patients breathe. The equipment incorporates image-guided navigation technology—almost like a GPS inside the nose—highlighting important anatomy and providing the surgeon with greater confidence in a small, delicate and challenging area. Our current equipment is now broken. It is obsolete and so old it cannot be repaired. Without the equipment, patients with sino-nasal diseases or tumours will need to go elsewhere for treatment. Microtome Tissue Slicers

To make an accurate diagnosis when a patient has a suspicious mass of tissue surgically removed, Richmond Hospital Lab physicians rely on a microtome to slice tissue samples obtained from the patient in the operating room.
Richmond Hospital has four microtomes that are 20 years old, the oldest in the entire region and now at the end of their lifespans. They are now so obsolete, if they break, parts are unavailable and they cannot be repaired. Over the past five years, the Lab has seen an increase of nearly 65% in the surgical samples that must be processed. After so many years of wear, slicing must often be repeated multiple times and slides are often duplicated to ensure at least one slide will be the correct thickness. New microtomes will speed workflows and ensure highly accurate tissue slices can be made consistently and reliably each and every time so our physicians can provide you the answers you need as a patient or a family member.
